Roy Keane blasted Marcus Rashford during Manchester United’s humbling defeat to Arsenal and said his ‘general play as a footballer is shocking’.

Ruben Amorim’s side kept Premier League title challengers Arsenal at bay in an uneventful first half at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

But Arsenal outclassed Manchester United after the break, clinching a 2-0 victory through goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba.

Keane was on a live watchalong on The Overlap during the game and described United’s performance as ‘rubbish’.

The legendary Premier League midfielder was particularly critical of Rashford, who struggled to make an impact after coming on for the final half an hour.

Rashford has looked bright since Amorim’s arrival in Manchester – scoring three goals in two games before the Arsenal game – but was benched for the trip to Arsenal and failed to push his case after coming on.

‘I’ll tell you something, Marcus Rashford came on there. His general play as a footballer is shocking,’ ex-Old Trafford captain Keane said.

‘Watch his header there. Have United’s subs given anything since coming on? Nothing. The subs have done nothing.

‘Manchester United deserve nothing anyway. They were rubbish. You know what happens with United? They fool you, they fool you. They’re not dynamic.’

Asked whether he saw any promising signs from United, Keane added: ‘Not tonight, no.

‘I’m really disappointed with Manchester United. I thought the players were going through the motions a little bit.

‘It was easy for Arsenal. The first half was fine but I was expecting a bit more.

‘The manager’s probably thinking he thought United were a bit better than this. I was getting really frustrated at the end there.’

The victory was Arsenal’s third in a row and sees Mikel Arteta’s side cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

Manchester United, meanwhile, stay in the bottom-half of the table on 19 points after 14 games.

Elsewhere, league leaders Liverpool were held to a 3-3 in a thrilling clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park, while Manchester City got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Another former Manchester United star, Dimitar Berbatov, also reacted to Arsenal’s victory over the Red Devils.

‘I admit that in the second half, the storm was there for United,’ Berbatov said on Amazon Prime. ‘Ruben Amorim said earlier that a storm was going to come for his team and it came tonight.

‘The set-pieces were a big problem for them and Arsenal scored twice from them. Now it’s back to the training ground to fix the mistakes.’
